When María Josefa de Grijalva was born on January 4, 1766, in Terrenate, Sonora, Mexico, her father, Juan, was 21, and her mother, Maria, was 21. She married Jose Antonio Yorba in 1772. They had 16 children in 36 years. She died on January 3, 1830, in Alta, California, at the age of 63, and was buried in San Gabriel, California.
